How to Wet Set (2.0), ft. a Baby Middy Haircut

Screen Shot 2018-01-30 at 10.14.24 PM

I’ve been promising a brand new hair styling/wet set tutorial for some time, so here it is! A few of you will have been following me long enough to have caught my original post and videos (head here for the original wet set tutorial and here for the original brush out tutorial), but I wanted to film it with more controlled light and, more importantly, I wanted to show you all how much faster and easier, and more controlled, the process is when one has the proper vintage haircut.

page4

Since the middy haircut is a crucial part of getting the proper 1950s look, I’ll save the truly in-depth discussion it warrants for another post. For now, I will simply say that I have the “Baby Middy,” and while the basic principles I use are applicable to all hair lengths and cuts, the process I’m going to demonstrate in the below youtube tutorial is very specific to that haircut. If you’d like an in-depth discussion of basic pincurling and wet setting, and are working with longer hair, or less of a “u” shape framing your head, I would suggest watching the “How I Wet Set My Hair” video previously filmed. The most important differences in the process are direction and size of the pin curls. But, if you have committed to the Baby Middy or something similar and are wondering how to achieve the hair do shown in my Instagram video here…

…then look no further!

Before you get started, you’ll need three or four basic things:

  1. Hair pins
  2. Setting lotion (I personally use Garnier Fructis Spray Gel as I find it holds best on this length of hair)
  3. Spray bottle full of water
  4. Comb (optional)

…and now, you’re ready to go!¬†

If you have any questions about wet setting, feel free to ask away, and stay tuned for part 2, how to brush out your wet set!

Love,

Miss Lark Bahar

Spotlight Saturday: Sun-Soaked in Miss Nouvelle

7108870065041448121?account_id=1

Hello all!

Today’s Spotlight Saturday features an up-and-coming clothing company¬†since I’ve lately been featuring brands that are already established. I’m always on the lookout for new retro clothing brands to support as I like to balance my wardrobe with new, sturdy items that I don’t have to worry about deteriorating (particularly at work). Upon being contacted by Miss Nouvelle¬†for a collaboration, I was happy to find a growing collection full of fun prints and desirable cuts perfect for any pinup wardrobe. From playsuits to pom pom tops, Miss Nouvelle features¬†a variety of summery items that can help add a little playful glamour during this steaming time of year.

I chose the Twirl Skirt in the Sunsoaked print to review since I absolutely fell in love with the print for featuring summery objects like sunglasses and magazines. I went for the smallest size – a small – knowing that it might be a bit large since the measurement is listed as 25″-26″. Luckily, upon receiving it, although the waist WAS large, the belt that arrived with it had holes down to a size plenty small enough for my 24″ waist!

3843730177840140344?account_id=1

Which brings me to my favorite aspects of the skirt. A matching belt!!! I don’t have any other reproduction skirts that come with a matching belt (and belt loops) and I absolutely love this feature. AND the skirt has pockets. Can you really argue with that? Although the skirt clocks in at $115 and isn’t the cheapest option out there, these features alone make the skirt worth it in my opinion. The pockets mean I can wear it to work so I can carry around my phone, and the belt helps keep the skirt in place and flattering even when petticoats are thrown under and add to one’s waist measurement. The material is obviously sturdy, and I could easily fit my petticoats under since it’s such a full skirt. Definitely a thumbs up from me on all accounts.

And the fact that this skirt matches so many of my tops was definitely a huge seller. So many possibilities! I paired the look with one of my sweater tops today since I’m wearing it to work and need a little warmth inside, but I already have a thousand looks planned that I can’t wait to put together.

fullsizeoutput_106

And you can see how full the skirt is in action in a little video I filmed for Instagram:

Since this skirt is so useful for work, I definitely hope to add more to my collection as well as branch out into their other styles since they’re all so gorgeous. This two-piece seersucker playsuit’s particularly caught my eye:

And the pom pom tops are to die for!

Weekly Outfit Roundup (02/13/2017-02/19/2017)

Hello all!

Another week of outfits for your viewing pleasure. Put together some exciting new looks this week!

Miss Lark Bahar

Tuesday’s Look

Since Tuesday was Valentine’s Day, I naturally pulled out this Vivien of Holloway dress that rarely gets worn since it’s a bit too tight in the hips and loose in the waist. Oddly enough, I’ve somehow never paired it with all red! I’m not much of a Valentine’s Day gal (pretty neutral about it, really), so I decided to pair it with my sassy Ariel brooch to give the themed look a bit of that skepticism. My wet set was also quite tight for some reason, so my hair looks a lot shorter than it usually does.

Thursday’s¬†Look

Decided to take my brown suit out for a run before spring and summer hit full time, and was amazed when I actually looked at my closet and realized I had the pieces to a perfectly matching ensemble! The dress actually fits me awfully, very tight in the neck, tight in the bust, very loose in the hips and stomach, and the blazer fits loose in the waist and is a bit short (I have a suspicion this set was made for a petite size), but I love the ensemble enough that I might very well save it to get it tailored. I’d primarily bought the set for the blazer, so it’s a happy coincidence finding I can actually do something with the whole thing.

Friday’s¬†Look

Wanted a quick and easy outfit, so decided to separate my Christmas harlequin set again to create a new outfit, this time with the top. Pardon the poor quality photos. Had to use my phone for these! And pardon the half painted nails! Didn’t have time to fix em up before going about my errands.

OUTFIT ROUNDUP CATCH-UP/MASTERPOST: (09/12/2016-10/16/2016)

collage_fotor

Starting to wonder if I should turn this into a monthly outfit roundup. Been really tough keeping up with it with everything happening in my life at the moment. But for now, I’ll still try to post this roundup weekly!

Hope you enjoy this past month’s collection of looks.

Can’t believe this was only the second time wearing this skirt! Insane. Most exciting part of this outfit is probably the scarf situation. As my wet set wasn’t dry, I knew I had to create an outfit that made use of one of the few scarf colors I own, so I decided to try layering my scarves for the first time. Absolutely LOVE the look it gave! And it helped show off the green of the hills and the flower stems in the skirt while nodding at the purple. Also, this is a top I purchased somewhere like Kohl’s that’s actually perfect for the bullet bra shape. I always hesitate with stretchy modern tops, but they help show off the shape of a vintage bra better than some vintage tops!

The best part of this outfit was definitely my kitty photobombing my photos. The worst part was that I dropped my brooch and she broke in half after this ūüė≠ Just have to glue her back together….

This is definitely one of my favorite outfits of all time. I originally decided on this top so I had more opportunities to make use of this most fabulous of vintage skirts. And the addition of the hat is really just the icing on the cake. Sooooo gorgeous!

09/19/2016

Ever have one of those days where your camera just doesn’t want to cooperate? This was one of those days. Anyway, this outfit was put together to take my shoes for my future Disneybound out for a test run, and to play around with possible hairdos for the bound as well. This messy poodle would DEFINITELY be perfect for an Ursula bound.

I’m still unsure if I actually like this outfit as pink, white, gold, and brown aren’t really my ideal pairing or color schemes I’m used to, but I loved getting to think outside of (my) box to match my wonderful new Belle brooch! She’s so perfect, I knew I had to put something together that matched her perfectly.

09/26/2016

I was having a damn good hair day this day. Sometimes wet sets just…turn out perfectly and you really wish you knew what made it happen, but there’s no rhyme or reason. Also, my camera/the lighting decided to make me super pale when shooting this outfit. Again, no rhyme or reason.

Was excited to finally bring out my Halloween pin-up skirt to play! Had this custom made for me last year and it’s truly one of my favorite pieces. Also tried Besame’s Dusty Rose lipstick shade for the first time. Definitely need to get used to wearing pinks still, but I was rather fond of the contrast between the dusty shade when paired with dark eye make-up.

I’ve had this sweater top so kindly gifted to me by one of the participants in one of my last giveaways for what feels like ages and just been DYING to wear it. This rich green color is so damn hard to find, so having the chance to add it to my wardrobe in the form of a cashmere sweater is just…a dream come true. And finally I got to take it out for a drive! Ignoring the 90 degree weather as always, to do so. Love the color combination with the rich jewel tones.

WEEKLY OUTFIT ROUNDUP (08/29/2016-09/11/2016)

These past two weeks have been a bit hectic for my roommate and I for various reasons, so we were able to document fewer outfits of mine. Luckily, two weeks yielded a decent enough number for a roundup post!

Miss Lark Bahar

Last Monday’s Look

I decided to pull out one of the wiggles I won from a Vivien of Holloway giveaway around Christmas last year as I transition into fall/winter styles. Since this is a bright dress, I don’t have much of a window to wear it since it’s too warm for most months here, but I figure it’s close enough to summer to work for now. It is still in the 100s after all. Side note: I definitely have to acquire some sort of glue to seal the heels of all of my shoes. They really take a beating with all the walking I do.

Last Friday’s Look

I’ve been dying to wear this capri skirt set for ages but the thick brocade material just made it too hot to justify. But just like the outfit above, I’ve been in the autumn mood, so I finally decided to wear em. It’s been so long that I actually forgot how poorly they fit. Really need to take them to the tailor and get the front area taken in and the seat area let out. I actually popped a button at work! And yet there’s so much loose fabric in the front…

This Tuesday’s Look

Again, this outfit was trying to work in a bit more of an autumn-friendly aspect, this time with color-scheme. I realized I’ve not been wearing all of my beloved shorts lately, so decided to plan a darker look with my striped shorts for my brooch review this week.

Went full-on summer garb with this look, but ah well. It’s a transitional period ūüėČ. I had fun with all the accessorization! I really need to get this dress in¬†autumn-friendly prints.

This Friday’s Look

I honestly have no words for how much I am in love with this vintage dress. I got it awhile ago but didn’t want to wear the wiggle in the heat, so figured I’d save it for autumn-time to give me something to look forward to. I’m so glad I did! I have never had a wiggle that fit me so perfectly since my proportions are so curvy, but this dress is honestly a dream. It feels absolutely amazing on and even has my most coveted of necklines: the wide-set square neckline. Such a beautiful piece. I wish it photographed as beautifully as it looks in person (but prepare for spam anyway).

WEEKLY OUTFIT ROUNDUP (08/22/2016-08/28/2016)

Collage_Fotor

Hello everyone!

Today was the first week of my last semester of classes before I graduate with my Masters degree, and it was a rather hectic week. I went to a handful of classes as I wasn’t sure what single class to take in conjunction with Independent Study for my paper, so everything was a bit up in the air till the last minute. Luckily, I settled on one with a Turkish professor focusing on Urbanization and Cities in the Middle East, and I absolutely adore it! So much speculation about the future and talk of how perceptions of the future in the 1960s still color our design aesthetics and decisions. Plus, she loves detective novels and has assigned us one as required reading for the course. Can a¬†gal really argue with that?

But anyway, no more talk about me! Without further ado, I bring you this week’s looks!

Love,

Miss Lark Bahar

Tuesday’s¬†Look

First day I personally had class to attend, so I opted for my favorite vintage top and a custom skirt of mine to try to bring some joy into an otherwise somber day. Even opted for a little brooch that looks a bit like a schoolhouse!

Wednesday’s Look

Today’s look was thrown together to try to match to the five new brooches I featured on my blog that day. I wanted to wear a Marilyn since it was such a hot day, so that was a bit limiting, but I ended up trying out my new red Marilyn and I’m amazed at how much brighter this red is than my old one! Makes me wonder if my old one has just been worn so much it’s gotten darker, but…I suspect not! I believe the fabric is actually brighter this run (more of a maraschino red than a darker cherry red).

Friday’s Look

Completely in love with this look. First time taking this Marilyn top out for play (as it DEFINITELY requires pasties and I couldn’t find mine…), but I felt it was the perfect shade to match with my new-to-me vintage abstract ballerina printed skirt. While I’m over-the-moon excited to create outfits with this skirt (all those colors!), I think this was an appropriate start.

I told you guys I’d be better about my weekly roundups! I’m back, baby!

Love,

Miss Lark Bahar

Last Sunday’s¬†Look

Yes, I cheated and am including last Sunday’s outfit since it didn’t get to show up on my blog due to it’s appearance at the end of my Week of Disneybounding. I just couldn’t wait to wear my first new Pinup Girl Clothing skirt in…god knows how long! Not a big¬†fan of the shorter skirt (I sold all of my old PUG skirts that hit at my knee), but I love the print too much to return it. Just have to roll my petticoats up three times so they don’t show and it’s not a huge deal.

Monday’s Look

Another new PUG item featured today! I’ve been completely in love with the new printed PUG peasant tops, but couldn’t afford any when they were released. So happy when this Tiki printed one dropped with it’s gorgeous colors when I could afford it. I’m not huge on tiki themed prints, but this one reads in a less cliche way so I knew I had to have it! Plus, it featured the new bust design, so I was curious to see the fit (blog post coming). Also my first time trying out my new shade of Besame lipstick. Totally in love (also blog coming on all my Besame <3).

Thursday’s Look

I realized this week that somehow my roomie’s phone takes better images in our apartment than the camera. Does it make sense? Nope. Am I glad to have realized it? Yep. The intense shadows are so much softer! And you can actually see all of the featured colors. Yay! First time wearing my other new Besame shade, Carmine, an orange-y red that’s still a bit scary for me to wear.

OUTFIT ROUNDUP CATCH-UP/MASTERPOST: (07/04/2016-08/06/2016)

I’ve been so bad about the outfit roundups lately…..sorry, guys! Life’s been all over the place with the move, and these take a bit too long for me to make time for ’em lately. I promise I’ll go back to writing them every week after this.

Enjoy!

This is actually an outfit that I threw together for a shoot for Le Bomb Shop last 4th of July that I never ended up wearing. Figured I loved it so much, might as well bring it back!

This was the first run this summer of a dress that accidentally disappeared in my closet. A huge shame since it’s the perfect summer staple for those days its too hot to wear…anything, really. Good thing summer in Tucson lasts 3/4 of the year! I had fun color blocking the various shades of purple – something I’ve started doing recently.

This outfit featured a dress I had originally purchased with plans to save it for a Disneybound at Disneyland, but given the plans changing given the apartment move, I decided I couldn’t wait that long to wear such a perfect summer dress!

This outfit is definitely 1950s casual in my opinion. While it’s perhaps not my favorite of¬†pairings, the prints, colors, and shape of the whole look definitely feels time-period accurate to me.

This is another one of those “I know I don’t have to walk in the heat, so I’m going to wear sleeves” outfits. Always happy when I can don this ballerina-printed dress! Despite the fact that the bust is about 4″ too small. (Excuse my bruised up legs….moving is quite the chore!)

This Tuesday’s Look

Having received a whole bundle of items from the wonderful shop Lady K Loves¬†the past week¬†(review to come), I knew I had to try to avoid wearing and showing off the items until my blog post, but just couldn’t resist at least wearing the staple piece that came in the lot! So I planned this outfit around the beautiful black wrap top.

This Thursday’s Look

This was the last little hurrah for this dress of mine as it’s simply too short and the bust too small. It’s currently on its way to a new home, but not before I got to pair it with one of my new hats gifted to me so kindly by my great aunt for a cute, Southern Belle kinda¬†feel!

I love love love this outfit for a whole slew of reasons, but perhaps the most obvious one is that I so rarely find ways to create purple outfits (this skirt was the only purple item I owned), but I received the purple striped top with the bow tie, the earrings, and the belt all in the same week, and BOOM! Perfectly purple.

This Monday’s Look

This was probably my favorite look of the week as it incorporated a whole slew of “favorites:” favorite vintage top, favorite Pinup Girl Clothing top, favorite Disney brooch, favorite style of hat – even my coveted peplum “New Look” silhouette. I can earnestly say that I will spend my whole life trying to find more of these vintage Catalina tops. Still a bit heartbroken that I found a pink version but it came with the full play-set and sold almost immediately. Definitely the one that got away.

This Tuesday’s Look

These shorts made their way into my wardrobe this week with the intention of using them for a future Disneybound. Of course then I realized I somehow don’t have nearly enough printed tops to pair them with! Most of my prints are represented in my bottoms. Guess I’ll have to change that….but hey, this outfit matched my new evil eye bracelets from Turkey perfectly!

This Wednesday’s Look

Rainy overcast day means breaking out the “sleeved” shirts! Tried the “stripes as a neutral” look today and I can honestly say I’m in LOVE. ¬†Must acquire striped tops now. ¬†And I love that the red accents on the top matched the belt so well and pulled the look together so perfectly.
