Spectrespects, Esmeralda, and Pineapples: 221 Broderie Accessories + Discount Code

My quest for small shops to feature has led me to find many a talented artists and creators, but the shop I’m bringing to you offers accessories featuring the themes I love with a more unusual twist. Instead of the wood, acrylic, or plastic materials all of my other handmade brooches showcase, 221 Broderie offers accessories and artwork that uses embroidery. I absolutely loved the look of her minimalist character designs…

…but the design that captured my heart (and originally led me to finding 221 Broderie) was  her embroidered brooch depicting Luna Lovegood’s Spectrespects.

I knew I would be proud to show off her work and wanted my readers to have the chance to fall in love with her unique work, so I was happy when she accepted my request for a collaboration. Although the price point is a bit higher than some shops, the amount of detail and extra work that goes into making embroidered, unique pieces is definitely worth the cost, and she happily offers custom pieces as well. In fact, she insisted on it! And we ended up deciding on a variety of items to show off her range: the spectrespect brooch, a pair of beaded pineapple earrings

…and a custom rendition of one of my favorite Disney dames (another one of those ladies who gets lost in official Disney merchandise), Esmeralda. I have a deep, deep love for her, and knew that Laureen, the artist behind the shop, would do her justice. Since her minimalist style was clear cut, I knew what Esmeralda would look like even before she arrived with her friends at my house, and I’m happy to say what I received did not disappoint.

I was unsure how the hand-embroidered pieces would feel and look in person since I don’t have any other accessories using this medium, and I was surprised to find that each item felt so different. Since Laureen makes use of additions like sequins and beads, the three items were of varying thicknesses and feels.

img_0401

Similarly, the backs of the items were lined differently. The earrings and spectrespects were lined with felt, whereas Esmeralda was lined with a thin, leathery material. The brooches have the fascinator simply glued onto the back. While I think this is fine with the Esmeralda brooch, I’m curious to see how the glue holds up with the felt. Hopefully well! They seem solidly in place for both at the moment.

I was so excited about these new accessories (that would fill out my Harry Potter and Disney brooch collections nicely as well as my growing earrings collection), that I donned them the next day so that I could show them off to my lovely readers as soon as possible.

I put together a summery outfit (still a necessity here in the desert) that I felt matched all of my items perfectly. Honestly, these shorts might be the most versatile items I own! The pineapple earrings and spectrespects brooch were the items I actually wore around that day.

img_0359img_0354img_0362

I will say that the spectrespects specifically were smaller in person than I had anticipated when looking at her photos online, but I ended up not minding this when actually putting them to use. I think they’re more versatile when they’re not…well….glasses-sized. In retrospect, the size Laureen made them is actually perfect.

img_0372img_0380img_0379

I am honestly so ecstatic about my Esmeralda brooch. I think that her wardrobe perfectly lends her to Laureen’s minimalist style as she retains recognizability even when details are softened. Of all the items, Esmeralda is the thinnest as she has no embellishment, so I anticipate having to take extra care with her to make sure she doesn’t bend, but my handy dandy brooch holders should keep her nice and safe when I’m not wearing her.

If you’d like to order one of 221Broderie’s pieces for yourself, you can enter the code “LARK221B” until October 31st for free shipping! She may be from France, but you won’t have to worry about insane international shipping costs.

WEEKLY OUTFIT ROUNDUP (08/22/2016-08/28/2016)

Collage_Fotor

Hello everyone!

Today was the first week of my last semester of classes before I graduate with my Masters degree, and it was a rather hectic week. I went to a handful of classes as I wasn’t sure what single class to take in conjunction with Independent Study for my paper, so everything was a bit up in the air till the last minute. Luckily, I settled on one with a Turkish professor focusing on Urbanization and Cities in the Middle East, and I absolutely adore it! So much speculation about the future and talk of how perceptions of the future in the 1960s still color our design aesthetics and decisions. Plus, she loves detective novels and has assigned us one as required reading for the course. Can a gal really argue with that?

But anyway, no more talk about me! Without further ado, I bring you this week’s looks!

Love,

Miss Lark Bahar

Tuesday’s Look

First day I personally had class to attend, so I opted for my favorite vintage top and a custom skirt of mine to try to bring some joy into an otherwise somber day. Even opted for a little brooch that looks a bit like a schoolhouse!

Wednesday’s Look

Today’s look was thrown together to try to match to the five new brooches I featured on my blog that day. I wanted to wear a Marilyn since it was such a hot day, so that was a bit limiting, but I ended up trying out my new red Marilyn and I’m amazed at how much brighter this red is than my old one! Makes me wonder if my old one has just been worn so much it’s gotten darker, but…I suspect not! I believe the fabric is actually brighter this run (more of a maraschino red than a darker cherry red).

Friday’s Look

Completely in love with this look. First time taking this Marilyn top out for play (as it DEFINITELY requires pasties and I couldn’t find mine…), but I felt it was the perfect shade to match with my new-to-me vintage abstract ballerina printed skirt. While I’m over-the-moon excited to create outfits with this skirt (all those colors!), I think this was an appropriate start.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit & More: My Collection of Lavinia’s Tea Party Brooches

With my brooch collection now nicely hung in my room, I recently came to the realization that I have two primary categories: vintage and Disney – with Harry Potter sprinkled in there a wee bit. As a huge bookworm, I decided to go on the hunt for shops that featured book and story themed designs to create an all new category to fill out. One of the first (and my favorite to date) that I came across was the Etsy shop Lavinia’s Tea Party, a shop that primarily focuses on “tea essentials and vintage China,” but happens to feature over 350 brooches! This shop, alongside its vintage fashion silhouettes, kitschy cacti, and sassy kittens, just happened to feature brooches showcasing the artwork of one of my most beloved writers: Beatrix Potter.

As I know I’m not alone in my love for Beatrix Potter, I knew Lavinia’s brooches would be absolutely perfect to feature on my blog, so contacted her about a collaboration. As I wanted to showcase the range of what she features, I opted for 3 brooches of Beatrix Potter’s art work of Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck, and Mrs. Rabbit, an elegant terrarium and a sleek flapper.

I was curious what the quality of these would be like in person as Beatrix’s artwork has such a recognizable yet soft color palette that could too easily be messed with. From Lavinia’s online images, I hoped that they would be as true to the original feel of the drawings as possible without looking washed out. As they were listed as wood brooches, I knew they would at least lack any unnecessary shine and gleam that would take away from the homey feel of the items, and was pleased to see that I was not only correct about this, but the colors in person are actually more vibrant than the photographs on her Etsy and look extremely accurate! If only I had access to the set of Beatrix Potter books I grew up with to provide a true comparison.

IMG_9845.JPG

The sun was washing out the brooches as it was too bright, but it was impossible to pass up such a cute picture! They all look like they’re in their natural habitat. But I took some photos at a desk to show them off a bit better so you can see how clearly the detail reads.

I would love to eventually have her whole collection of Beatrix Potter brooches, and at $8.16 a brooch, this is absolutely doable! I love having something to collect that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg yet adds to the feel of my looks so much.

Take a gander at them in action today:

How perfectly did Jemima (my personal favorite) match my outfit??

To purchase the brooches I received, you can head to the following links: Plant Terrarium, 1920s Flapper in Green, Peter Rabbit Eating CarrotsMrs. Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck.

I’m honestly so excited to style the colors featured on these brooches as I don’t have many pastels or greens in general. Particularly excited for working them into my fall wardrobe that’s dying to see the light of day again!

If you’d like to follow Lavinia’s shop, she has the following social medias where you’ll find the most beautiful assortment of china and accessories:

My brooches are more than worth the cost, and I’d highly suggest the shop for any fellow bookworms (she also has a whole slew of Wizard of Oz themed brooches) or kitsch, vintage, and novelty lovers out there!

Last Sunday’s Look

Yes, I cheated and am including last Sunday’s outfit since it didn’t get to show up on my blog due to it’s appearance at the end of my Week of Disneybounding. I just couldn’t wait to wear my first new Pinup Girl Clothing skirt in…god knows how long! Not a big fan of the shorter skirt (I sold all of my old PUG skirts that hit at my knee), but I love the print too much to return it. Just have to roll my petticoats up three times so they don’t show and it’s not a huge deal.

Monday’s Look

Another new PUG item featured today! I’ve been completely in love with the new printed PUG peasant tops, but couldn’t afford any when they were released. So happy when this Tiki printed one dropped with it’s gorgeous colors when I could afford it. I’m not huge on tiki themed prints, but this one reads in a less cliche way so I knew I had to have it! Plus, it featured the new bust design, so I was curious to see the fit (blog post coming). Also my first time trying out my new shade of Besame lipstick. Totally in love (also blog coming on all my Besame <3).

Thursday’s Look

I realized this week that somehow my roomie’s phone takes better images in our apartment than the camera. Does it make sense? Nope. Am I glad to have realized it? Yep. The intense shadows are so much softer! And you can actually see all of the featured colors. Yay! First time wearing my other new Besame shade, Carmine, an orange-y red that’s still a bit scary for me to wear.

My Week of Closet Disneybounding (08/08/16-08/12/16)

Collage_Fotor

With my latest plans to head to Disneyland cancelled due to the “big move,” I decided to finally take the plunge on recording a week of Disneybounding at home for my blog to bring a little bit of that magic into my daily routine. The bounds you’ll find featured this week are bounds that I would, for various reasons, not wear to Disneyland – whether it be because a certain clothing item is too tight to execute the bound at a theme park, or it’s a character whose outfit I wouldn’t normally choose to bound. I wanted to, for the first time, work purely from my closet without purchasing additional items to solidify any of the bounds – a surprisingly difficult, yet enjoyable task! I adore being able to look at what I have to try to come up with silhouettes and color combinations that would sufficiently and (to a degree) recognizably represent Disney characters. For those of you who don’t know, Disneybounding is the process of choosing clothing items from your closet or in your personal style that in some way or other represent specific Disney characters and themes, and it’s a great way to pull in some magic to your wardrobe if you’re feeling a little stuck.

So without further ado, I present to you My Week of Closet Disneybounding!

Love,

Miss Lark Bahar

Day 1: Ariel

While Ariel was my favorite princess as a child, I’ve always been partial to her human wardrobe rather than her mermaid look. I’m not a huge one for color blocking since I generally either choose to feature all one color, or some kind of print on top and bottom to break looks up, so I knew that mermaid Ariel would never be a Disneybound look I’d wear to Disneyland itself (unless I ended up moving to California and was able to go to Disney often enough to change this). Since Ariel’s still one of my favorite princesses, and I knew I had the colors required to bound as Ariel, I knew she’d be a perfect start to my week! The earrings – really the best addition to any Ariel bound – are actually from my very first bound which happened to be Kiss the Girl Ariel. The skirt was originally used for a Buzz Lightyear Disneybound in the parks but everyone kept guessing Ariel, so I figured….well, I know it works! I was going to wear a circle skirt but then realized that a pencil skirt would emulate her tail much better anyway. The large hat I ended up wearing to emulate Ariel’s hair was actually my roommate’s idea, so shout out to her!

Day 2: Genie

I knew this bound wouldn’t be the most recognizable one, so not a bound I would choose to wear to the parks unless going in a group, but I’m quite happy with the look anyway. Love that pop of red paired with the blues! If I wasn’t working purely from items already in my wardrobe, I would definitely have found a blue for the bottom lighter than the navy skirt I used, but then that would defeat the purpose of this week. Also, my roomie came to the rescue again by suggesting I take my photo with my Turkish carpet today to fit in with the whole look. This look was put together more for the colors than a silhouette.

Day 3: Snow White

This is actually a Disneybound that I WOULD consider wearing to the parks…if my little sister hadn’t already worn the same yellow skirt for the same bound in Disneyland. It’s just too perfect! Also decided to whip out one of my warmer tops for this since I liked the idea of really playing up the 1950s look and what better way to do that than with a slash neck top? This is actually the first time I’ve tried to pin my hair up into a shorter bob, so that was a fun endeavor. Looked pretty cute! Though a bit too…well-coiffed for the way I’d want my short hair to look, probably, if I actually got it cut that way. I even donned purple eyeshadow for this bound!

Day 4: Mushu

This is another character I chose knowing I would probably never bound him in Disneyland since he’s not terribly recognizable being…well…mostly red. I was debating between wearing a felt skirt and peasant top combo and this velvet dress and finally opted for the latter feeling the texture of the material gave the same depth fire gives. I threw on a hair scarf and earrings to emulate the color in his horns, and voila! Mushu. Plus, I threw on the gold pin thinking maybe it looked sorta sword-ish?

Day 5: Belle

Honestly, I have never been so excited for or happy with a Disneybound in my life. Belle, my main girl, has been a bound I’ve wanted to throw together for AGES, but never quite had the right pieces for. I recently purchased a beautiful blue and silver gown to wear for a fancier Belle bound, but for the casual look, I knew I wanted to use the Pinup Girl Clothing underskirt as an overskirt to emulate Belle’s apron, and I already had a proper white top and black flats to use, so it was only a matter of finding the blue gown to pull everything together. I found the dress months ago and was ECSTATIC when I did. Plus, how adorable is the handmade book brooch?? The only reason I didn’t save this bound for Disney itself is because the dress is MUCH too small in the bust for me to be able to wear to a theme park. Doesn’t really allow for much movement at all. But you can bet I’ll be using the rest of the look to bound Belle at the parks some time in the future 😉 Will just have to play around with the hair a bit more to get the bow to show properly…and acquire the right lipstick! Definitely would’ve gone with a dusty rose shade if I’d had it. And then hope that I’d actually be let in!

I’ve been so bad about the outfit roundups lately…..sorry, guys! Life’s been all over the place with the move, and these take a bit too long for me to make time for ’em lately. I promise I’ll go back to writing them every week after this.

Enjoy!

This Tuesday’s Look

Having received a whole bundle of items from the wonderful shop Lady K Loves the past week (review to come), I knew I had to try to avoid wearing and showing off the items until my blog post, but just couldn’t resist at least wearing the staple piece that came in the lot! So I planned this outfit around the beautiful black wrap top.

This Thursday’s Look

This was the last little hurrah for this dress of mine as it’s simply too short and the bust too small. It’s currently on its way to a new home, but not before I got to pair it with one of my new hats gifted to me so kindly by my great aunt for a cute, Southern Belle kinda feel!

This look was a bit out of the box for me, but I haven’t worn this skirt in ages and liked how the shades of the top matched the skirt when paired with a bright red belt to pull it all together.

This look – while something I’d be more likely to wear in the cooler months normally – was thrown together for my review of the gorgeous Paris blouse.

I love love love this outfit for a whole slew of reasons, but perhaps the most obvious one is that I so rarely find ways to create purple outfits (this skirt was the only purple item I owned), but I received the purple striped top with the bow tie, the earrings, and the belt all in the same week, and BOOM! Perfectly purple.

Hands down one of my favorite outfits of all time! I just love these colors and everything matches so perfectly top to bottom. I felt so pretty! And this was the first time I took my Pinup Girl Clothing underskirt for a run.

I’m generally not a huge fan of red, white, and blue…but this outfit fit together too seamlessly to ignore! And I’m always glad when a chance to wear this hat arises as I don’t find it terribly versatile.

I adore the sweetness of this outfit! Yellow’s another one of those colors I’m hoping to expand in my wardrobe – particularly yellows of the buttery variety. I’d always felt yellow would look atrocious on me, but I’m so pleasantly surprised.

This was another one of those “I probably wouldn’t be wearing this if I had to walk around at all today” outfits. Pencils are a no-no in 115+ degree weather! I wish I could use this skirt in the spring and summer time to give it the lighter look it deserves, but it’s just too hot normally.

Had the pleasure of adding these capris to my wardrobe this past week. The first real tiki-style print I own! Also was working with my natural hair this week – which means my victory rolls were about 10x as large.

This Monday’s Look

This was probably my favorite look of the week as it incorporated a whole slew of “favorites:” favorite vintage top, favorite Pinup Girl Clothing top, favorite Disney brooch, favorite style of hat – even my coveted peplum “New Look” silhouette. I can earnestly say that I will spend my whole life trying to find more of these vintage Catalina tops. Still a bit heartbroken that I found a pink version but it came with the full play-set and sold almost immediately. Definitely the one that got away.

This Tuesday’s Look

These shorts made their way into my wardrobe this week with the intention of using them for a future Disneybound. Of course then I realized I somehow don’t have nearly enough printed tops to pair them with! Most of my prints are represented in my bottoms. Guess I’ll have to change that….but hey, this outfit matched my new evil eye bracelets from Turkey perfectly!

This Wednesday’s Look

Rainy overcast day means breaking out the “sleeved” shirts! Tried the “stripes as a neutral” look today and I can honestly say I’m in LOVE.  Must acquire striped tops now.  And I love that the red accents on the top matched the belt so well and pulled the look together so perfectly.

İstanbul to Tucson, the Journey of the Princess Dress

IMG_7723

With the devastating news from Turkey still so freshly on our minds, it felt appropriate to pay homage to a little shop by the name of Kunupa Butik operating on the so-called Asian side of İstanbul in Kadıköy. Towards the end of last month, this wonderful shop decided to reach out to me via her Instagram, introducing herself by explaining that she was a seamstress who designs and sews retro-styled clothing and then sends it out to various brick-and-mortar stores in Turkey, and that she was hoping to move to America around New Years and wondering if I had any shops in the United States that I could suggest for her to work with.

I was more than happy to suggest shops to her that I know of (though my knowledge of smaller local shops is woefully limited), and she offered to send me one of the dresses I fell in love with upon scanning through her work. Thinking back to the journey this dress took only a week before the terrible events at the İstanbul Atatürk Havalimanı makes the gown all the more precious yet bittersweet to me.

13557784_10154295878308185_5624962316031214433_n

Not only is it a tie back to my İstanbulite family (who is luckily all safe and sound), but also helps showcase that the Middle East isn’t defined by terrorism and terrorist attacks, or foreign Orientalized perceptions of the geographical area as an ironically helplessly dangerous region. As all around the world, creative endeavors thrive no matter the tragedies that surround us, and Kunupa Butik is a wonderful representation of a small, thriving shop seeking to grow her business internationally with beautiful designs.

So without further ado, I present to you the dress that travelled round the world to make its way onto my blog: Kunupa Butik’s Prenses Elbisesi (or, in English, the Princess Dress).

IMG_7742IMG_7748IMG_7753IMG_7768

The reasoning behind calling this gown the “Princess Dress” is quite obvious to me as the moment I saw photos of the number, I was reminded of a retro Snow White. Though I’m not generally a polka-dot fan, and haven’t worn a skirt above my knees in a very long time, this style struck me for a whole slew of reasons. The first was that the skirt featured was obviously quite full and would easily accommodate a petticoat (in this outfit’s case, Pinup Girl Clothing’s Canvas Underskirt). The second was that the shades used weren’t the typical blue and lipstick red found on so many reproduction gowns, but a blue paired with a deep orange-y, burnt sort of red I find very reminiscent of Turkish tiles.

60%20x%2060%20%20Pano

And the final trait that made me truly fall in love was that AMAZING collar! I’ve been looking everywhere for off the shoulder tops and gowns, and Kunupa’s gown more than fit the bill! Not only was it off-the-shoulder, but the material draped around reminded me so much of gorgeous gowns from the 50s I can only dream about.

1950s-ParisFashion5

This wonderful collar helps dress up a gown and add a unique flair without taking away from the wearability of it, and I’m so happy to have this piece in my wardrobe.

IMG_7787IMG_7795IMG_7805

And although I’ve paired my outfit today with my favorite Belle Disney pin, you can bet I’ve got plans to wear it for a Snow White Disneybound! The soft, flexible yet sturdy material makes it ideal for use around a theme park or any other kind of heavy use while the quality of the gown in general assures me that this is an item that will last.

First week of summer vacation! Working at noon every day means my outfits generally have to take into account the Arizona sun beating down on me as I walk there. At least my legs will tan? Hard to believe that I was so anti-short even last summer!

Wednesday’s Look

Thursday’s Look

Placed my own PUG order for the first time in over a year and made the purchase of their bright blue peasant top and canvas underskirt. Couldn’t wait to take the peasant top out for a run with my favorite striped shorts! I love that they redesigned it so the bust is larger, but was a bit bummed that the waist also seemed a bit larger and the sleeves a bit tighter (though those might just give with time). This might be the brightest outfit I’ve ever put together! And I was happy to find a use for my vintage yellow scarf.

Sunday’s Look

Took my new 1950s set out for a run today! I’m 95% positive this outfit was cut for a pre-teen (or a small chested teen) as the bust darts start at my armpits…but what a cute freaking set. The shorts fit me perfectly (and I MEAN perfectly…an inch tighter along the legs and hips and I wouldn’t be able to zip them up), and I’m a sucker for anything that’s made to match. Plus, this is the first outing of my Belle Disney pin, my favorite pin! She’s been sitting around waiting to be worn for ages.

Tuesday’s Look

This look is one I put together last year for a photoshoot for Le Bomb Shop for 4th of July. The skirt got lost in the space beneath my bed for almost an entire year, so I had to take it out for a run soon as I rediscovered it; however, the more notable part of my wardrobe was definitely my hair. I tried putting finger waves in my hair for the first time and after an hour and a half of fruitlessly attempting to finger wave the sides and tops of my hair, I gave up and settled for vaguely finger waving the top. While I love the look on others, I might just have too much hair for this. I ended up being inspired by the below test photo of Judy for Ziegfeld Girl, just had to sweep some of the top of my hair to the side since I had too much of it to stay back in a properly shaped way.

Saturday’s Look

Reset my hair for the weekend – sadly, had to take it out when it was slightly damp, so the back isn’t nearly curled as usual – but re-wore my Paris Jenny dress! Converted into a skirt for the day (which is apparently a slightly painful process with Jenny dresses because of boning…….) PS, pardon the poor-quality photos for the following two days – left my camera charger at work so had to work with a phone!
